Natural Ice Sculptures from Kenney Park

This morning I had a few minutes to hike back to Kenney Park and check on the Olentangy River. The river is moving too fast and temperatures have not dropped enough for the river to ice over. However, left high after the floods, were several pools of ice. The beautiful and intricate patterns were very fun to photograph. My friend Bryan recently sent me a web link to a page about different types of ice. formed. I will have to do my research later on and see if any of these formations match up with the photographs on the page he sent. Megan and I are headed to the Columbus Zoo this afternoon. I hope you enjoy these images.

Which one do you like best?

  3. Beth Ellen and Chris-

Thank you for your kind words. Yes Chris, it was VERY cool today, but not quite as cold as Chicago...but I here that air will be moving in to Columbus very soon.

The lines in the ice reminded me of the contour lines of a topographic map. Very cool indeed.

  6. Fabulous images, Tom....but how on earth are we meant to choose between them? They are each beautiful and fascinating in their own way...but if you insist on us choosing our favorite, it's got to be number 4...
Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos (works of art),

  9. Tanya and JJ-

    Thank you!

    Tom-

Luckily these were small puddle. I did step on a large puddle to see if it would hold me....and crash and boom! Down I went..hard....Luckily, there was not liquid water left in the puddle!

  14. Kory, Kris, Marvin, and Adam,

Thank you for stopping by and taking a look at these photographs. I had great fun taking them, and I think I really like the results. For those of you that are interested, I have posted black and white versions of these shots to my flickr account as well.

I think number 2 is the people's choice!

  17. Thanks Drowsey Monkey..

My wife Megan likes the second picture because she said it was calming and soothing. Maybe this shot reminds people of the ocean? Perhaps they are hearing waves? I know that I find the beach one of the most relaxing places to be and for me, I think it is pretty cool that a tiny piece of winter in Columbus reminds me of a warm beach and ocean.
