The Friendliest Spiders That You'll Ever Meet

Have a happy weekend- from a crab spider.  Yet another really fascinating creature that I photographed on my lunchbreaks this week.  I guess being in the office can have its benefits?

I have quite a fondness for crab spiders.   How many spiders actually have a face that resembles that of a human?  I have photographed  several over the years, including one lying in wait on daisy fleabane and another that was colored paper white.

  1. Great start on my weekend with these shots! What a face!

  2. It is a cheery little fellow (or gal?) cute, but many more eyes than most of my friends. (unless I count an acquaintance that has an "I" in every sentence.)

  3. I had one that assumed this exact stance on the side of my blue Prius the other day. My wife said, "That's not a spider." She learned otherwise when I nudged it. (She didn't freak out; if she freaked out over a tiny chartreuse spider after having been married to me for 38 years,I'd know there was something wrong.)

  4. Though I have certainly seen crab spiders in my garden, I don't think I have ever seen the face of this spider before. Amazing photos!

  5. Thanks Samantha. Have a grat weekend.

Beyond my Garden- I do nit know how to determine the sex of any Speer- that's a really interesting question. I'm guessing we'd have to use a dissecting scope to really make that determination, but that's merely a guess.

Scott- perhaps the spider mistook your Prius for a gigantic blue flower? My wife isn't a big spider fan, but mice, well, that's anoher story.

    Thank you Adrienne!

  6. I ended up chatting with a stranger at the Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk, and he told me that he thought I'd enjoy your photos... and he was right!

I just photographed one of these at the Audubon-Scioto Metro Park, and it was great finally learning what kind of spider it is.
