Birds weren't the only thing Megan and I saw in Puerto Rico- Unbeknown to most of the vacationers at our villa, several trees in the playground area housed colonies of these bats during the day. They were really pretty big. Puerto Rico is known to be home to 13 different bat species- including the big brown bat. Perhaps this is what these are, but really, that's just a guess.
This is my contribution to this week's Camera Critters Meme.
Well spotted - nice capture.
ReplyDeleteWow, fantastic shot.
ReplyDeleteI was really glad you found the bats- so that we didn't sit at the tables beneath them...
ReplyDeleteIt looks like they sleep with their eyes open...or did the wake up when the heard you?
ReplyDeleteMichael- Thanks. I found these guys while I was photography Anolis species lizards on the trunk of the tree from which they were hanging. I was probably underneath them a good twenty minutes or so before I discovered them.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Megan- Yes, I think I woke them up, and they were looking at me thinking what are you doing down there!

Great photos! You certainly aren't in Ohio anymore. I don't know if you would be interested in my blog, but since I'm from Xenia, Ohio, I thought you might be interested. I'm going to work in Yellowstone Park starting the end of April. Hopefully I will make it until the end of October. I will be taking in the nature, but I will also be writing about the great older people who are working there. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteFantastic pile of bats! I love all their curious little fuzzy faces and the leathery wings tucked in. Great shot!
ReplyDeleteGosh, what strangely attractive or ugly things, can't decide, but I keep looking them so I must like them.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot. We've got some kind of bats in our neighborhood, too, but I have no idea what kind they are.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! What a tremendous shot! Creepy and cute all at the same time.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! This shot made my day! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAwesome picture!
