SKYBUS IS DONE

For those of you who have flights booked on Skybus:

Looks like Megan and I will have to find a new way to get to Maine. We had flights scheduled for May, June, and August. : (

From Dispatch.com:

Skybus shuts down, cancels all flights 8:16 PM

Skybus Airlines, a Columbus carrier that excited central Ohio travelers with its $10 fares, is calling it quits.

The news came quickly today, with the airline planning to announce at 9:30 p.m. that it will no longer be in business Saturday. After today, all flights are canceled.

This is bad, bad news for thousands of people across the country.

The SKYBUS experiment did not work.

Skybus, it was GREAT while it lasted.

  1. Oh, what a pity, you'll have to find another way to travel. I would have loved to have a ride in one of these some day, looks like I'll have to wait until Maglev comes to Australia or something instead!

Sounds like these must have been pretty cheap too - here travel is usually much more expensive, although admittedly the infrastucture just isn't there with less people.

  2. David- Skybus here was a discount airline that sold tickets for as low as $10.00 The airline is shutting down as of tonight, leaving thousands of people stranded across the Country. The airline began operations from and was headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, where Megan and I live.

I have seen pictures of the other Skybus-but I don't think we have these in the U.S.

  3. Bummer that your flights to Maine got cancelled, I guess with fuel costs going through the roof SkyBus couldn't continue with low fares. I'm no relation to Margaret Theberge, not that I know of anyway, the name is not familiar to me.

  4. John- I'm dissapointed for sure- Skybus allowed us to fly much more often to see Megan's parents. Unfortunately, that well has dried up. We probably won't come up in May or June as planned, but we'll still be up in August for a wedding.

  5. Too bad! I understand, because it isn't cheap (or easy) to fly from Evansville to anywhere. My recent trip to Tucson required driving to St. Louis to catch flights that were cheaper. Coming home we had to go through both Dallas and San Antonio to get back to St. Louis and then drive home late as well. Sigh. Wouldn't it be nice if there were easier ways?

  6. Columbus has been the hub for many low-cost failures and I often wonder why? They always seemed to be filled with people and lines were long.

  7. Abe- Yes, the proximity of Columbus to major hubs in Cincinnati and Cleveland really hurts us. Southwest, which as we all know is a discount carrier, is the major carrier at Columbus, so hopefully they will pick up the slack for Skybus, and maybe, just maybe, jet blue will come back. Megan and I always check on flight options at Dayton as well.
