Tonight's Sunset

Tonight's Sunset, originally uploaded by Tom Arbour.

A spectacular sunset here in Columbus Ohio this evening. Megan and I went for a walk earlier in the day, but we had to wear our ankle high boots the water was up so high in the park just behind our house. When there is plenty of standing water in the park, I always hope for great sunsets, since the light bounces off the water and everything really looks spectacular. Sure enough, after a week of gray days, we finally had a break in the clouds this evening. When I looked out the window and saw the sun was getting low and the sky was a wonderful pinkish orange, I grabbed the camera and raced down to the park. It was worth the run, I got there just in time to grab this shot.

  3. Awesome. After having missed too many wonderful opportunities myself, I started making sure I had a camera with me wherever I went. That was back when cameras were heavy & cumbersome, but I was pretty dedicated!

  5. You always have such wonderful sunset pictures! You should paint this picture. Notice how the reflecting clouds are darker and more saturated with color, sure would make a nice painting! Go for it.

  6. Terrific sunset, Tom. The color in the sky is good, but the reflection is fantastic.

  7. Thank you Marvin.

When I exposed the shot, I was going for the reflection, and that left the sky a little bright. Some day when we have 10 stop dynamic range consumer grade digital cameras (our current ones have about a 5 stop range), who knows how cool a shot like this will work.

  10. Thank you very much! This image was captured in my Canon rebel XTI in RAW, and was processed in Canon Digital Photo Professional. I adjusted the white balance, increased contrast a bit. I'd love to see this scene as an HDR image, but on this day, I didn't have my tripod
