Cardinal Mugshot from the Backyard Bird Cam

Umm. Doesn't that sunflower seed look good? I have actually tried one. They aren't bad, believe it or not. With the recent cold snap, activity at the backyard bird cam has really ramped up. This morning Megan and I watched as no less than eight cardinals positioned themselves in our box-elder, figuring out who would go next to get at our seed-covered windowsill.

So am I completely crazy or has anyone else popped a black oil sunflower seed?

  1. LOL! I could just picture you eating bird seed, you're doing it for the love of your birdies...testing quality! I'm laughing! I've never done it, but I'm gunna now!
That picture is great...you need to make a "wanted" cardinal poster, that would be much fun.

  2. Great shot and you know this morning I remembered to check your webcam before heading off to work! Didn't see the Cardinal though!

  3. Cool mug shot. Sunflower seeds aren't bad, certainly. Too much work for me to bother with them, though. We humans are SOOO spoiled! *L*

  4. Tom,
What a darling web cam catch! That cardinal has personality. :D

We have one cardinal who hangs around the feeder with the pine grosbeaks.

Today I'm going to see if Jeff can snap a shot of me hand feeding the chickadees. Winter has much more life when you have an active bird feeder. :D

  5. Tom, I hope not from the bird seed bag, lol, its like tring pet biscuits, lol. Thanks for sharing, I really like cardinals, never really saw them here in the winter, but summer we get many if you know where they hang around. Thanks for sharing, Anna :)

  6. Yeah, Anna, I ate the seed right out of the bag!

I'd have to say that the northern cardinal is one our most ubiquitous birds here in winter. The males really stand out when the leaves are off the trees.

  7. Chris- Yep, there you go. That is what I was doing. Testing the quality!

Thanks Monarch, I saw that someone popped on, and it must have been you! I think you just missed some great action. Keep checking back.

Thanks Lana- Yeah, but have you ever eaten one from the bird seed bag?

Thanks JJ- Looking forward to chickadee shots. Here in Ohio we only have carolina chickadees, I'm guessing you have black-caps, which are great birds- I enjoy watching them over the Carolinas. They just seem to be more tame, they are larger, and they are also more colorful, in my opinion.
