On the flower of Canada thistle, Cirsium arvense, an all too common weed of both gardens and natural areas. I haven't investigated what the name of this insect might be, although I have seen it often, and I'm wondering if it considered a pest. Any thoughts?
As far as the technical details ago, this shot was captured with natural light at F/2.8, resulting in the very shallow depth of field.

Terrific photo, really striking! I have been playing with aperture recently on my little digital camera, but nothing like this.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to get full details due to the blurring, but could it be a 'Margined Soldier Beetle' (Chauliognathus marginatus)?
Thanks Mungo- That surely is a good bet. Thank you for the link. Tomorrow, I'll post more pictures of this same insect with a great depth of field that will give us a better picture of this beetle.
