Continuing with the best of the backyard bugs from 2009, here is a shot captured on August 24. Any thoughts re: the name of this creature are greatly appreciated.
Awesome shot. Anyone can tell from its posture and huge frontal legs what the critter is up to ;) I'd be tempted to say it's a Diaea Dorsata that hasn't yet taken on the color of its perching spot, but those are from Europe. Threebanded crab spider (Xysticus triguttatus)? Those are from your area and the one picture I managed to find does seem alike but with a little more contrast in colors.

I'm always willing to answer any nature question you might have, or at least point you in the right direction.
Great shot. Nice contrast!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lana- These creatures spend all day without moving very far just waiting for something to eat. I think they're very cool.
ReplyDeleteTom: What a beauty, nice close-up.

ReplyDeleteThis spider is so beautiful. I don't know why so many people either hate or are afraid of these fascinating little guys.
