Crap, it's 2010. When did that happen?

We must have missed that on our marathon holiday trip that started on Christmas Eve. Drive to Akron, stay with parents & brother, Fly to Maine through Detroit, stay with parents, siblings, & grandparents (12 people in all!) fly back to Akron via Detroit, stay with parents and brother. Drive back home. Finally, yes, I am back home, and it feels wonderful. Happy New Year.

Sky Watch Friday- Evening Sunset in the Neighborhood

Although I'm only an occasional participant in Sky Watch Friday, last night, Megan, Weston, and I walked through the neighborhood, and I carried my point and shoot Panasonic LZ-8. I couldn't help but think last night's sky would be perfect for Sky Watch Friday.

Last Night's Sunset- Sky Watch Friday

Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve

I Love Clean Windows!

Last week's sky watch image featured our flight to Washington Reagan airport. U.S. Airways had apparently known that I was coming, and the window was perhaps the cleanest I have ever seen in an airliner. It didn't even have the top layer of the plastic window starting to peel away, like most plane windows that I have had the pleasure to look through. Just fantastic clearness, and the sky and clouds sure did cooperate on this day.

On our way back to Columbus through Washington D.C., we were treated to a spectacular evening flight into Reagan National. The first officer of the plane got on the intercom and told us that we would be completing one of his favorite landings, the "river approach" to Reagan. He announced to the left, we would be able to see the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Capitol.

Sure enough, we were treated to a spectacular landing. The little girl in front of me, probably four or five years old, was looking out the window too, and you can here her say, "Wow this a big city".

The Washington monument appears first, the the Lincoln memorial, than you can see the capitol building towards the back of the frame (its a bit fuzzy and difficult to make out). Finally, the Jefferson Memorial, right on the river, pops up for just a second before the video ends. Enjoy!

On Our Way to Maine

It isn't that often that I get such a clean airplane window AND a seat in front of the wing, but this mid-morning, on our trip to Maine, all the stars aligned perfectly, resulting in several great cloudscapes from the air. Maine is a fantastic place. Join me the next few days as I present western Maine in photographs.

Independence Day Sky Watch Friday

I started my day by listening to the Declaration of Independence read aloud here. I must say, it was thought provoking and fascinating to think how far our nation has come since this day 232 years ago. The King of England was "the man" back in those days. Check it out, it will take 6 minutes of your time.

By the way, this shot is from our trip to Sanibel Island this March. Yes, the trip during which I was sicker than a dog with a constant fever that I thought would NEVER go away!

Skywatch Friday

Taken from my favorite sunset photography area, Kenney Park, Columbus, Ohio. These cloud formations bring angels to my mind. I'm not one typically to see angels in the clouds, but the allegory here is too strong for me to ignore.

Sky Watch Friday- The Ohio Plains

Last Friday, driving back from Kelleys Island, I captured a few interesting images from the passenger seat of our moving car which was heading back to Columbus.

Sky Watch Friday- Olentangy Moon

I took this shot on my way back from the Olentangy river as I was walking through the park. I looked over my shoulder, saw the moon peeking through the black walnuts, and the pinkish clouds, and thought, I need to take a picture here. I set up the tripod and exposed the image for thirty seconds. There was little wind on that night, so the leaves were still throughout the exposure resulting in a crisp image.

Megan and I continue our house search. We came very close to making an offer on a house, but after much soul searching, coupled with research on basement foundations, we decided against it. Our evenings are dedicated to going through homes with our Realtor, checking out neighborhoods, or browsing homes on the internet. I know we'll find a great place, and I'm glad that we live close to where we'll be moving. Although I won't be a minute's walk from the Olentangy like we are now, I'll still be close and still be able to document the living creatures of the river.

This week I ventured across Ohio. On Tuesday, I was in Wood County looking for an extirpated sedge, Carex formosa, near Bowling Green State University. Today I was updating rare plant records at Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve in Ottawa County. Next week, I'll be back to Kelleys Island to continue a vegetation and rare plant survey of the state park lands on the Island. It's sedge season, so if you are feeling brave, wander into a woodland near you and start collecting sedges, especially members of the genus Carex. It is quite fun, really, it is!

Sky Watch Friday

Flying up above the cumulus congestus, up towards the cumulonimbus, April 27th, somewhere northwest of Columbia, South Carolina, and taken above 10,000 feet, when I could legally use my digital camera, according to FAA regulations! Needless to say, it was a bumpy ride just after taking this photo. We were traveling from right to left in this photo, straight up and into the thunderhead. As we climbed up above the cloud level, the rest of the ride to Dayton was quite smooth. I love flying in an airplane, and I love taking pictures of the sky from this incredible vantage point.

For today's Sky Watch post, I dug into the archives. Last June 19th, we had a spectacular late spring sunset along the Olentangy River. When we move away from our home at the end of August, I'll surely miss being able to pop down to the river and take shots like this one. Megan and I really enjoyed this scene, and we have several shots of us with this sunset as a backdrop, one of which I used for my Flickr avatar. Have a happy sky watch Friday!

Sky Watch Friday- Spring Comes to the Olentangy

Monday morning, April 21, 2008. I waited a while on the gravel bar of the Olentangy River for the clouds to position themselves just right for this photograph. There was a gentle breeze beginning to pick up after a still and calm morning. Winds from the southwest, and the fluffy cumulus clouds were moving from right to left in this image. Things are greening up so quickly here around Columbus, even though I took this photo at the beginning of the week, this scene is so much greener now. Happy Sky Watch Friday.

Skywatch Friday- Flight from Laguardia to Columbus

I know nothing really about "sky watch fridays" except several blogs that I read participate by posting images of the sky every Friday. Today, I'm doing my first sky watch post. This image was shot out the window of an Embraer 140 as Megan and I were ascending up through the troposphere after taking off from Laguardia in NYC. We were visiting Megan's grandmother in Manhattan over the Columbus Day weekend, and I just couldn't resist taking this shot. In fact, I have tons of pictures that I have taken over the past few years from airplanes, but this one may be my favorite.

It looks like we are in for a fabulous Saturday here in Ohio, and I can't wait to get out and see what is blooming. Finally, I think we'll have trilliums, dutchman's breeches, and bluebells just starting to pop this weekend.
