The Pickaway Plains

I spent the evening in one of Ohio's former grassland areas, which happened lie just as the landscape changes to the rugged foothills the Appalachians, as seen along the horizon in the second photo. What was I looking for?  Come back later this week for the answer!

Super Summer Weekend #1

I'm back!  So much of my time goes to the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves Facebook page.  If you haven't liked it, please do.  We provide some pretty awesome comment, if I do say so myself.  It's right here:  https://www.facebook.com/ohiodnap

So, to start getting back into the swing of things, how about a look into our first super summer weekend?  Strawberry picking at Legend Hills, Velvet ice cream at Ye Old Mill, and a rather engaging trip to the Heart of Africa courtesy of the Columbus Zoo.

The boys are getting big, aren't they!  Four and six.. Drop me a comment, I'd love to hear from you.  And hey, super summer weekend #2 is about to begin.

Time to Build an Arc?

It's pretty hard to believe that the sun was shining earlier this week.... it's been raining for two days straight!

Welcome Winter

Do you know why I know it is winter?  Upon arriving at work this morning all our door locks were frozen!  We eventually got in- but not before I was seriously regretting leaving my gloves at home.  There's something about the first subzero temperatures that surprises me each winter, and this morning was no different.  I thought I didn't need gloves- and I was wrong.

Although my morning and evening commutes were draped with clouds, central Ohio was treated to a quite nice mid-day sunshine event.  As winter drags on, sunny scenes like this one will decrease as we plunge into the gray abyss that is winter here in Ohio.  It's hard to believe that this field will be warm and full of soybeans in only six months or so.

Welcome to the Ohio State Fair

There's nothing really quite like the Ohio State Fair. In fact, it encompasses so many things, so many different types of people, and so many interests, it just about defies description. Yes, you have agricultural and livestock competitions and fair rides (which we really like and there will be plenty of that featured here), but there really is so much more, especially if you take the time to see out those curiosities. Megan and I did just that on Sunday evening. In the interest of brevity, I'm going to do something that I haven't done in a long time- I'll be uploading the images and presenting them as a slideshow.

AND...Megan and I will be FINALLY heading to Maine this Wednesday morning courtesy of U.S. Airways. We can't wait to get there, and you can be sure I'll have plenty to blog about from the pine tree state.

A Photographic Journey to and through Slate Run

A few mile west of the park entrance, we came across this lovely field of dairy cows. This even brought Megan's camera out. She loves cows.

And then it was on to the park, first a trip through wetlands, then fields, and to the farm, and back again.

Slate Run Metropark

Birds, pigs, wetlands, what more could Tom and Megan want!

Today, Megan and I went to Slate Run Metropark in Pickaway County, just south of Columbus. I must say, what a park. We hiked about 6 miles through created wetlands, prairie, beech-maple forest, oak forest, and even stopped by a historical farm made to look like 1880. I would recommend anyone from Columbus make to trip south. Here are some photos of our experience. Also, after you are done watching the slide show, continue to the embedded video. A mother pig and her piglets put on quite a show for us!
